Trump signing directive to clean up space junk

President Donald Trump has announced plans to create a new, sixth branch of the military that would be called the Space Force.

Trump did not go into details about what military role the so-called "space force" would carry out or who would command it, but he framed space as a national security issue, saying he does not want "China and Russian Federation and other countries leading us".

Trump also said he would direct the Defense Department and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to create the Space Force as a sixth branch of the US armed forces. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to carry out the assignment.

A similar idea for a "space corps" that would have been under the U.S. Air Force was passed in the House's version of the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, but did not make it through the Senate's bill. He said that he even included it as part of his national space strategy.

On Monday, the President announced the US will establish a "Space Force" as a way for the United States to exercise extraterrestrial dominance, according to Reuters.

"It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space".

Americans first landed on the moon in 1969, reaching a goal set by former President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and capping a decade-long space race between Washington and Moscow.

The new directive emphasizes data-sharing initiatives, seeking to tap into commercial space know-how in tackling the challenge of a low earth orbit increasingly crowded with communications satellites and space junk. It also would require the Secretary of the Air Force to increase the number and improve the quality of its civilian and military "space cadre", submitting a report to Congress on its plans by next March. He said the Space Force will "lead the management of traffic and mitigate the effects of debris in space... That's a big step", he said in the White House on Monday. It is created to avoid collisions and spacecraft breakups.

"SPD-3 builds on our continued progress implementing SPD-1, which is galvanizing American space leadership by returning to the Moon with commercial and global partners, and SPD-2, which will create regulatory certainty for entrepreneurs to raise capital to grow the American economy in space".

Although Trump has talked about the Space Force before, the announcement came as a surprise.

NASA will work with private companies, which have not yet been chosen, on the missions, Warner said in a phone interview.

"Working with Congress, this will be a deliberate process with a great deal of input from multiple stakeholders", White said in a statement.
