Tropical Depression Two forms in the Atlantic

Beryl, the years second named storm, formed this afternoon from tropical depression and is tracking a slow course towards the Caribbean.

The newly formed tropical storm is now over 1,300 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands, moving west-northwest.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hour (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Now, that complex of storms is being recognized as Tropical Depression TWO. Upper-level winds are forecast to become unfavorable in a few days, and the depression is expected to weaken to a trough of low pressure before it reaches the Lesser Antilles.

It is a long way from the United States and isn't expected to be a threat.

"This system is much less organized and the potential for tropical depression development is even lower", News 6 meteorologist Troy Bridges said. The National Hurricane Center will be watching this to possibly name it Beryl ahead of its dissipation.

Beryl was located between the Cabo Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles. Areas of strong wind shear, the difference in wind speed and direction with height, are shown in purple.

A tropical depression forms when a low-pressure area is accompanied by thunderstorms that produce a circular wind flow with maximum sustained winds below 39 miles per hour.

Subtropical Storm Alberto became the first named storm of the 2018 season.
