Thunberg v Trump: A trillion trees is 'not enough'

He urged optimism at a time when many business leaders, politicians and activists here have expressed anxiety about waning worldwide cooperation and climate change, trends that Trump has either championed or dismissed.

President Trump touted the US economic boom in a speech to global leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday.

Speaking on Tuesday as the US Senate is set to begin the impeachment trial back in Washington, Trump touted the US's newly-minted position as the No. 1 producer of oil and natural gas - a boast that flew in the face of sustainability efforts underway at Davos, where the theme of the conference was focused on "a cohesive and sustainable world".

Trump also highlighted the "Phase One" deal both China and the US agreed to just last week.

"My generation will not give up without a fight", Thunberg said.

"We are all fighting for the environment and climate". "They are the heirs of yesterday's foolish fortune tellers". Earlier this January, as Common Dreams reported, a coalition of almost two dozen groups in the United States launched a major new campaign, Stop the Money Pipeline, that aims to "end the financing of climate destruction" by demanding major banks and financial institutions end investments in coal, oil, and gas.

Trump is scheduled to spend the rest of his two-day visit to Davos in meetings with business executives and other world leaders. The high-profile forum brings together world leaders, business elites, economists, and celebrities from around the world. Police said traffic was halted temporarily as a march of 100 activists or more made its way to the Swiss town.

Stiglitz also complained about the president's stance on climate change, telling the Independent, "He managed to say absolutely zero on climate change".

He added: "The time for skepticism is over". That reality also places governments are the forefront of the response.

"We will never let radical socialism destroy our economy and wreck our country or eradicate our liberty", he said.

"These numbers aren't anyone's political opinions or political views", said Thunberg.

One source initially said Cook was meeting Trump over dinner with other CEOs on Tuesday but later said Cook planned to meet the president for breakfast on Wednesday.

"America is winning again like never before", the President told the forum.

Trump's opposition to renewable energy, his withdrawal from the Paris accord negotiated under his predecessor Barack Obama, and the free hand extended to the fossil fuel industry puts him at odds with the thrust of this year's event. "The American dream is back, bigger, better and stronger than ever before".

For Thunberg, addressing a panel on "averting a climate apocalypse", the status quo is not an option.

Robin Niblett, director of the Chatham House think tank, called Trump's performance "an nearly plain vanilla presidential campaign speech, laying out an unassailable set of statistics that tell the Democrats "good luck taking me on on this, because you won't stand a chance".
