SpaceX rocket launch carrying 64 satellites in massive rideshare mission

The launch was initially scheduled to take place at 10:31 a.m. PST from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Earlier today (Monday, Dec. 3rd), private aerospace giant SpaceX launched its Spaceflight SSO-A: SmallSat Express mission.

Falcon 9 is SpaceX's smaller reusable rocket and has successfully delivered supplies to the International Space Station before landing back on Earth.

All major aspects of SpaceX's most recent Falcon 9 Block 5 booster recovery have been documented from start to finish, offering a solid glimpse into the work that actually goes into getting a rocket booster from the deck of a SpaceX drone ship to one of the company's many hangars for inspections, repairs, and refurbishment. The booster, covered in black soot from its two prior flights, landed again on a remote controlled platform in the Pacific Ocean after launch, queuing up the rocket to fly for a fourth time.

This was the company's 19th mission of this year, a new record.

A Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Monday, carrying a 64-satellite payload.

That success came in part due to SpaceX's customer for this mission: Spaceflight.

Reusing rockets is key to Elon Musk's space company, which hopes to make humanity "a multiplanetary species". And companies including SpaceX and OneWeb are racing to send constellations of thousands of high-speed internet satellites into low-Earth orbit.

Later on, SpaceX confirmed second stage engine cutoff and successful deployment of four microsats and the upper and lower free flyer with additional payloads for SSO-A. "Nothing wrong with a little swim". The rocket booster previously launched Bangladesh's Bangabandhu-1 satellite in May and the Merah Putih (formerly Telkom-4) satellite in August for Telkom Indonesia.

"Falcon 9 has touched down for the third time", a SpaceX representative said on the webcast.

The mission comes days after India fired a rocket carrying 31 satellites from eight different countries into space. Spaceflight is expected to share updates about the remaining payloads.

Putting satellites into orbit is a costly proposition. The overall record is 104, set in February 2017 by an Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. Still, it's an important step toward commercializing spaceflight and making orbit more accessible.

The reflective, inflatable sculpture is created to eject from its satellite and orbit the earth 'for several weeks before disintegrating upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, ' the museum said.
