Samsung steps up its HDR rivalry with Dolby through Amazon-backed HDR10+
HDR10 Plus has contrast ratio and the colors for each of the frames.
The HDR10+ update brings Dynamic Tone Mapping to the standard.
"As an advanced HDR10 technology, HDR10+ offers an unparalleled HDR viewing experience - vivid picture, better contrast and accurate colors - that brings HDR video to life", said Kyoungwon Lim, Vice President of Visual Display Division at Samsung Electronics.
If that sounds familiar it is because dynamic metadata is one of the key advantages of the Dolby Vision HDR format that Samsung is specifically targeting. At Amazon, we are constantly innovating on behalf of customers and are thrilled to be the first streaming service provider to work with Samsung to make HDR10+ available on Prime Video globally later this year. Static meta data allows the same brightness throughout the movie or TV show. This means that if a movie's color scheme is bright overall, but some scenes are shot in dimmer light, they would appear darker than envisioned or intended. The South Korean tech giant made it available for use by third parties in March. In the second half of the year, the 2016 TVs will also receive support via a firmware update.
Amazon Video is the first streaming service provider to begin development of the standard for its audiences. Samsung has continually integrated more internet and social contents on its premium TV line ups which include the new QLED TVs.
The latest models of Samsung Electronics' QLED TVs and UHD TVs will provide video content through the Amazon app based on the HDR technology.
The stock of Amazon closed at $899.20 on Wednesday after a fall $4,58 or 0.51%.
