New tropical storm off Mexico; Hurricane Hector a Cat 4

Hurricane Hector will continue to churn out in the Pacific and could reach Hawaii as early as Wednesday although, by that time, it should start to weaken.

Hurricane Hector regained strength in the eastern Pacific late on Sunday and swelled into a Category 4 storm again with sustained 140 miles per hour winds as it stayed on target to possibly hit Hawaii by midweek, officials said. The center of both storms are expected to stay away from Mexico's west coast, although up to a half-foot of rain is possible from Ileana along the coast, potentially leading to flash floods.

According to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, the center of the hurricane was located about 225 miles south-southeast of Hilo, or 400 miles southeast of Honolulu.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Hector is expected to remain powerful through early next week, but no coastal watches or warnings were in effect. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the storm's progress.

Hawaii residents have now been urged to take precaution and prepare for the oncoming storm, with Hurricane Hector expected to hit this week. It was moving west at 15 miles per hour.

The hurricane's potential close pass of the Big Island comes as the state is still dealing with the ongoing issues from the eruption of the Kilauea volcano, which has been spewing lava since May 3.

Hector will bring increased surf and a high risk for risky rip currents to east- and south-facing beaches of the southernmost islands, especially the Big Island and Maui during next week.

Hurricane Hector Most likely Arrival Time of TS Winds as of 11 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018.

The NHC forecast gradual weakening on Monday night through to Wednesday.
