NASA video shows looming Hurricane Michael from space

Hurricane Michael is a "monstrous hurricane" and will deliver a potentially devastating strike to the Florida Panhandle sometime Wednesday, Gov. Rick Scott said. A Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds of 74 to 95 miles per hour. Winds become westerly late Thursday night into Friday morning, remaining 40 to 50 knots with gusts to 60 knots, until the center of Michael moves off the coast near the North Carolina/Virginia border Friday morning.

The 11 a.m. advisory for Hurricane Michael shows it is up to a 110-mph Category 2 hurricane - one mile below a Category 3.

The speed of the storm - Michael was moving north 12 mph - gave many people a dwindling number of hours to prepare or flee before being caught up in damaging wind and rain. "Today is the day to get a plan, because tomorrow could be too late". He said people will "not be dragged out of their homes", but anyone who stays behind will be on their own once the storm hits.

"You could see storm surge 10 to 12 miles inland", said National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham.

Mr Scott warned that he may order more evacuations due to the size of the potential storm surge.

There will be no shelters open in Wakulla County, the sheriff's office warned on Facebook, because they are rated safe only for hurricanes with top sustained winds below 178kmh.

President Trump has approved Florida's declaration of emergency. "It looks like another big one".

Scott also activated 500 National Guard Troops in advance of the storm.

Storm surge that could be greater than 6 feet is forecast as far south as Crystal River with more than 9 feet into Apalachicola Bay. But the surging seawater could also create perilous problems far from the coast, raising rivers and bays to unsafe levels as it pushes as much as 10 to 15 miles inland.

"The good news is, if anything, it'll be moving so quickly that by the time it gets up to mid-latitudes in the Carolinas or Virginia, it's going to get in and out of here really fast", Orrock said.

"Think about what we've seen before with storms like Hurricane Irma", he said.

Material from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Other locations in the state are under voluntary evacuation.

Hurricane Michael is forecast by AccuWeather meteorologists to make landfall over the Florida Panhandle during the middle of this week.

"You will see damage to infrastructure". The biggest concerns with Michael, therefore, are winds and storm surge.

More than 300 miles of coastline was under threat, the National Weather Service has said.

State offices, schools and universities were to close on Tuesday through the end of the week in panhandle counties.

Businesses are hanging tough as a nod to local first responders, just hours ahead of Hurricane Michael. This is in contrast to recent major storms, such as Harvey in 2017 and Florence in 2018, which made landfall in the United States and then stalled out. It is expected occur from Wednesday to Thursday as coastal winds turn to the southwest.

Earlier, a Hurricane Hunter aircraft had reported Michael's eyewall was a little less organized, however they noted overnight that the hurricane had been defying all odds by strengthening Monday even while enduring wind shear.

Hurricane Michael became a Category 3 storm with 120 mph maximum sustained winds on Oct. 9
