Met Office issues Hurricane Helene 'risk to life' warning

The storm is about 775 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.

In the image, Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Isaac can be seen circling the Atlantic Ocean while Storm 95L is on a collision course for the Caribbean. As of Wednesday, there were three major disturbances in the North Atlantic while Paul, Olivia, Mangkhut, and Barijut spun around the rest of the Northern Hemisphere - a hodgepodge of tropical storms and typhoons.

The official track has Florence hovering off the southern North Carolina coast from Thursday night until landfall Saturday morning or so, then veering south through SC and Georgia into Monday.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 3 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 4 inches are possible across the south-central portion of the Dominican Republic, southwest Haiti and Jamaica. The storm is moving to the northwest at 15 miles per hour and is expected to slow down later today and drift west toward southeastern NC.

Sustained winds have reached nearly 105 miles per hour.

The government of France has issued a Hurricane Watch for Guadeloupe and Martinique. The more southern track has also increased the risk for tornadoes and flash flooding. Some flooding was forecast early in the day for parts of North Florida, but those forecasts were adjusted later to include high swells and minor coastal flooding at high tide.

Meteorologists have given Hurricane Florence, which is now heading towards the U.S., a category four level strength, meaning the storm could cause major structural damage costing millions.

Overcast with moderate to heavy rain for south-west England, Wales, Ireland, north-west England and Scotland with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds through the afternoon and evening.

About halfway between Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Helene is the small but unsafe Tropical Storm Isaac, which was downgraded from hurricane status early this morning (Sept. 11). Forecasters also were tracking two other disturbances. One system, moving toward Texas in the Gulf Coast, was forecast at a 70 percent chance of cyclone formation over the next 48 hours.
