Jupiter To Make Closest Approach To Earth; Keep Your Binoculars Ready

The largest planet in the solar system will be close enough in June to see it without a telescope, according to NASA.

Jupiter will be so close to Earth in June that you will have the chance to see some of its moons ... if you have some binoculars.

Although it will be visible to the naked eye, having long-range binoculars will give ensure better clarity of the biggest planet.

"The general theme of our discoveries is really how different Jupiter looked from how we expected", said Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator, from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, when the first images were revealed.

Jupiter will be visible in the sky all night and will be at its closest point to earth. (It takes Jupiter approximately 12 earth years to orbit the sun.) Since all the planets in the solar system orbit the sun on the same plane, imagine them as runners on a track going at varying speeds. So, mark your calendars for Monday, as it will be the best time of the year to see it.

Jupiter will be its "biggest and brightest" during the month of June, and the planet will rise at dusk and remain visible all night with the naked eye, say NASA officials.

If you are an ardent stargazer and love observing planets and stars in the night sky then the month of June is exciting. And, unlike other astronomical phenomena, your geographical location on Earth shouldn't impact your ability view Jupiter, provided you have clear skies and minimal light pollution.

A rare spacey sight in the night sky is coming up later this month, and all you need is a pair of binoculars.
