Instagram expands into long videos, will compete with YouTube

At the same time, Instagram has introduced its new long-form video app called IGTV. Through the new app, you'll be able to watch videos from people you follow and creators Instagram thinks you'll be interested in.

The standalone IGTV app will be rolling out to iOS and Android globally over the coming weeks.

The new app, dubbed IGTV, will increase Instagram's video time limit from one minute to 10 minutes for most viewers. Instagram describes IGTV as "a new app for watching long-form, vertical video from your favorite Instagram creators".

While you're watching the videos, you can comment, share or like without leaving the full-screen video mode - a property Instagram seems to have borrowed from its parent company, Facebook. Instagram says it's not immediately paying for any content on the app, nor will it start with any advertising.

This not only will be on your Instagram app, but it's own separate app as well.

Instagram and Snapchat have been waging war with one another for years, but Instagram is branching out to attack new platforms this week. "It's mobile first, it's simple and it's high quality", shared Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom. While Facebook is mostly used for people to connect with friends and family, Instagram is a place users have been more comfortable following people they don't know, helping build an entire ecosystem of influencers who make money from their Instagram fame.

What makes this app different than Youtube is the native support for vertical videos as opposed to landscape video.

What do you think of IGTV? There are also channels, and celebrities themselves can be channels. Posts are categorized based on the recommended content on the "For You" page, videos from profiles that a user follows in the "Following" section, and trending posts in the "Popular" segment. "Right now, we are focused on building engagement", Systrom said during a press Q&A following the announcement. Also notable is the fact that everyone can be a creator - anyone can simply upload their own IGTV videos in the app or on the web. This compares to Instagram video posts which are capped at the one-minute mark, or Instagram Stories which can contain 15-second long video snippets.
