Huge Hurricane Florence Looms Large in New Views from Space

NASA satellites are providing a lot of different kinds of data to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center to help them understand what's happening Hurricane Florence.

NASA shared a new sobering view of Florence on Wednesday morning.

Cameras outside the space station captured several views of the storm at 8:10 a.m. Monday, according to NASA.

On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday.

Hurricane Florence is predicted to slam into the US East Coast as an "extremely risky major hurricane" overnight on Thursday. Helene will likely wear itself out before hitting land, the NHC said in its latest forecast, and Isaac, which has been downgraded from a hurricane, is on its way to the Caribbean, officials said.

Florence is now a powerful Category 3 storm with winds of 125mph, and is expected to strengthen before making landfall along the Carolina coast later this week.

Florence is the third hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, after Hurricane Chris (Category 1) and Hurricane Beryl (Category 2), which formed in early July but didn't make landfall.
