Facebook introduces a new platform, watch tab of original video

"As people are watching more and more video on Facebook, they want a place they can go to reliably and dependably watch video".

Facebook also admitted that they had funded some of the original shows as examples, but clearly stated that these are only a small percentage of all the available shows.

A recent blog post by Daniel Danker revealed that Facebook was introducing Watch on its platform.

Facebook will be introducing Watch to a limited group of people in the United States, with plans to expand from there.

That's what Facebook is calling the new section, which will only be made available to users in the U.S. for now, but is likely to expand outwards in the future.

And to find long term-success, Watch needs to convince publisher partners to allocate enough episodic video content to feed the portal and to entice consumers to tune in. Per reports, some of the shows that will be available on Watch include Tastemade's Kitchen Little (cooking show for kids), National Geographic's "Safari Live", NASA's "Science @ NASA", Gabby Bernstein (motivational series), A&E's "Bae or Bail" (reality show). On the larger scale, these are great figures that can quickly outpace most competition; and when Watch gains more popularity. Content creators can create sets of live or recorded episodes that follow a theme or storyline. If you like any show, you can just follow the show, and latest episodes will then appear in your Watchlist. Naturally, given that Facebook already knows everything about you and your social network (including things you don't even know about yourself), Watch will have a significant social component to it. Watch will let users sort videos according to various social criteria such as "Most Talked About", "What's Making People Laugh", and "What Friends Are Watching". The page will also inform the users about the show and what is it all about.

"The newsfeed, which [catered to] autoplay without sound, created this ecosystem of videos that are really different from what most video producers made before Facebook came along with their algorithm", said Solana Pyne, the executive video producer for publisher Quartz.

But Facebook faces steep competition both from publisher's owned-and-operated TV apps and from emerging video services like Hulu, YouTube TV and DirecTV Now.

The social media tycoon also features a total of 1.32 billion people on average who log onto Facebook daily active users (Facebook DAU) for June 2017, which represents a 17 percent increase year and 1.74 billion mobile active users (Mobile Facebook MAU) for December 2016 which is an increase of 21% year-over-year. One source said YouTube was a better home for its existing community, where Facebook's NewsFeed could help them connect with a new audience.
