Facebook data tool makes transferring to Google Photos a whole lot easier

People can access this new tool in Facebook settings within Your Facebook Information, the same place where you can download your information.

Because no one would blame you if you want to completely ditch Facebook these days, an upcoming tool (developed by Facebook), will allow you to quickly transfer all of your photos and videos from Facebook's servers into your Google Photos account.

Facebook Inc said on Monday it has introduced an option to transfer photos and videos from the social media network directly to other services, starting with Google Photos. Users in Ireland get to try out the tool first, but a global rollout is planned for 2020.

This open-source initiative is aimed at making it easier for Internet users to move data between different online services.

Lawmakers in the USA are pushing a bill that will improve online data portability. Founding members included Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter.

Facebook says that all data transferred will be encrypted and users will be asked to enter their password before a transfer is initiated. Actually, that might be underselling it.

"We've learned from our conversations with policymakers, regulators, academics, advocates and others that real-world use cases and tools will help drive policy discussions forward", Mr Satterfield said.

Most likely this effort from the Data Transfer Project is born in response to the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Facebook said it plans "to expand this [exporting feature] to other services in the near future". As mentioned, the utility is now only available to those in Ireland, with wider (worldwide) availability planned for the first half of 2020.
