China Says One Person Dead in Outbreak of Newly Discovered Virus

There had not been any human-to-human transmission of the virus. Despite the fears of the infection spreading, World Health Organization has reported that the virus has not spread and seems to be contained within the seafood market in Wuhan which is a major domestic and worldwide transport hub.

The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission said in a separate statement late on Sunday that 4 additional patients have been released and that no new cases have been detected since Saturday. Seven of these patients had a severe illness and 1 related fatality has been confirmed. The rest are in stable condition.

"PHAC is continuing to collaborate with partners internationally as well as working with federal, provincial and territorial partners and public health authorities and to ensure Canada's preparedness to rapidly identify and prevent the spread of this emerging disease should it present in Canada". The post was communicated by Edward Holmes with the University of Sydney, on behalf of a Chinese group led by Yong-Zhen Zhang with Fudan University in Shanghai.

A mystery respiratory virus which emerged in China at the beginning of the year has been found in Thailand, raising fears that the disease is not being contained.

Coronaviruses can cause diseases going from the regular cold to SARS. The man reportedly suffered from an underlying liver disease, but his death was caused by "respiratory failure and severe pneumonia". Some transmit easily from person to person, while others do not.

The agency said Monday it had been informed by Thai health officials that the patient there was recovering from the illness.

Most people will become infected with some type of coronavirus at some point in their life.

Coronaviruses originate in bats but can infect a number of animals, and from there jump to humans. She did not travel to other Chinese cities in recent months.

For some scientists and public health officials in the West, the evolution of the situation in Wuhan has a positive side: it shows that China's scientific infrastructure and public health policies have made great strides since the 2003 SARS outbreak.

The outbreak has been traced to Wuhan, where it affected several dozen people who had been to a major meat and seafood market.

"The evidence is highly suggestive that the outbreak is associated with exposures in one seafood market in Wuhan".

"PHAC continues to work with worldwide partners and collaborates with federal, provincial and territorial partners and public health authorities and assures Canada's willingness to quickly identify and prevent the spread of this emerging disease, should it be present in Canada".
