Boeing Expects Troubled 737 MAX to Return to Flight During Mid

Several airlines dependent on the Max had already said they were not counting on the plane until the summer.

That is bad news for passengers looking for deals. Finally, the American giant mentioned how it "regrets the difficulties" that have been caused to "customers, our regulators, our suppliers, and the flying public".

In addition to the costs of halting production, Boeing has to compensate airlines for flights that were lost as a result of the grounding as well as help its supply chain, reported Reuters.

Air Canada AC.TO said on Wednesday it has removed Boeing's BA.N 737 MAX from its flight schedule until June 30, 2020, a day after the USA planemaker warned the grounded jet would not win regulatory approval until mid-year.

Customers affected by the changes will get notice of their new itineraries and offered "suitable travel options", the airline said.

The three U.S. carriers that have the Max - American Airlines, Southwest and United Airlines - have all removed the aircraft from their schedules until June.

WestJet CEO Ed Sims said, "We thank our guests for their patience and our WestJetters for their commitment to keeping our airline moving safely and on time as we continue to adjust our schedule ..."

The FAA said in a statement on Tuesday that it is following a "thorough, deliberate process to verify that all proposed modifications to the Boeing 737 MAX meet the highest certification standards".

The Chicago-based planemaker has been updating the 737 MAX flight control system and software to address issues believed to have played a role in two crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that killed 346 people within five months. Boeing said it'd provide more details about its efforts to return the 737 MAX to service next week in connection with its quarterly financial report.

Air Canada had earlier opted to push back the return of the aircraft until March 31.

On Jan. 22, Air Canada chimed in, revealing it has removed its fleet of 24 aircraft from the operating schedule until June 30. It now has about 400 completed jets parked in Washington and Texas, waiting to be delivered to airlines around the world. "It was hard for anybody to trust us", Calhoun said.
