'Best meteor shower of the year' set to light up night skies

The Perseid meteor shower is already underway, but it's hitting its peak from Monday night on August 12 through Tuesday morning on August 13. Visibility will be best on the West Coast and across the southern Plains due to "cloud-free conditions". The rest of the Eastern Seaboard remains in the "fair" to "poor" category. The Perseids are one of the most famous of these meteor showers, because they can produce more than one flash per minute at their peak and because they happen during the summer in the Northern Hemisphere. To give another example, the Geminid meteor shower, which is observed each December, is named for a radiant in the constellation Gemini. However, it will face bright interference this year from the moon, which is close to being completely full, NASA said. According to NASA, a full moon at shower peak could reduce the meteor rates "from over 60 per hour down to 15-20 per hour".

Finally, if you're more of a morning person than a night owl, or you're just really into fireballs, the NASA All Sky Fireball Network will post videos of the show in the morning with the label "PER".

If you're willing to buck the odds, the best time to see the Perseid shower is 2 a.m. until dawn.

Meteors are generally seen all over the sky, the space agency said, so you needn't worry about looking in the right direction.

Weather permitting, NASA plans to livestream the meteor shower from a camera in Huntsville, Alabama, beginning at about 8 p.m. on the NASA Meteor Watch Facebook page. Many of the Perseid meteors will still be plenty bright enough to see from city parks, if you don't have a means to travel. It takes the Swift/Tuttle comet 133 years to make a singular rotation around the sun, and the last time it passed through the inner solar system was in 1992.

The peak viewing time will occur between 2am and 5am on Tuesday.

The Perseids are an annual gift from the comet Swift-Tuttle.

The Perseid meteor shower will be less spectacular than usual this summer because of bright light from the near-full moon. However experts say you can still get a good look at some shooting stars this week
