Arch bridge collapses in Taiwan bay, sparking desperate search for victims

A bridge collapsed into a harbour in northeastern Taiwan on Tuesday, crushing several fishing boats with some crew feared trapped, authorities said.

More than 60 army and naval personnel, including divers, were part of the search for other potential victims.

Six people are fear trapped after the bridge collapse.

Video of the collapse shows the moment the 460-feet Nanfangao Bridge buckled and crashed into the bay in Nanfangao, a Pacific coast fishing village. Disaster relief officials would not say if the storm had weakened the bridge or give other details on the cause.

When the bridge above the entry to the port of Nanfang'ao suddenly ruptured and collapsed, it crushed three fishing boats.

Su'ao Township Mayor Lee Ming-che also noted that six fisherman are thought to be trapped under the bridge, according to Taiwan News.

The offices have sent officials to care for their nationals at the scene, the ministry said, adding that it would provide assistance and stay in close contact with the representative offices and agencies involved in rescue efforts. State-run news agency CNA noted that a typhoon impacted the area over the past two days, causing winds to reach up to 162 kph (about 100 mph). That crash resulted in the truck catching fire.

According to rescuers, the nine injured foreign fishermen include six Filipinos and three Indonesians.

Video footage on Twitter showed a large lorry nearly getting across the bridge and then falling backward as the bridge collapsed into the water.

Measuring 140m long and 15m wide, it sat across a waterway in the Nanfangao fishing port and was high enough to allow larger fishing boats to pass underneath.

According to the company that designed the almost 60-ffot-high high bridge, MAA Consultants, it's the only single-span arch bridge in Taiwan supported by cables and the second single arch-cable steel bridge in the world.
