Apple Launches MacOS Catalina

Apple on Monday officially released macOS Catalina (or macOS 10.15), the next major update to its Mac operating system. Apple Arcade allows subscribers unlimited access to over 100 new and exclusive games for one monthly fee.

The writing has been on the wall for a while now, but Apple's new macOS Catalina update is finally killing iTunes for real.

Beyond that, macOS features new accessibility features including voice control.

You'll also find extensive Screen Time options in the settings menu, more or less matching what's already available on iOS.

Sidecar lets Mac owners use an iPad as a second display and use Apple Pencil as a stylus in Apple's own apps or third-party programs updated to allow for stylus input. Apple says that "users will begin to see their favorite iPad apps in Mac versions, including Twitter, TripIt, Post-It, GoodNotes and Jira", and that more are on the way.

The release of macOS Catalina today also sees Apple officially launch Apple Arcade on the Mac. According to the official Apple website, macOS Catalina 10.15 is only supported on MacBook Air 2012 and later, MacBook Pro 2012 and later, Mac mini 2012 and later, iMac 2012 and later, Mac Pro 2013 and later, iMac Pro, and the 12-inch MacBook.

All of those additions and more should be available to Mac users by the end of the day.

There are also a number of significant security enhancements, including T2 chip support for Activation Lock and tighter security prompt integration with Apple Watch. Find My can help users locate a missing Mac even if it's offline and sleeping by sending out Bluetooth signals that can be detected by Apple devices in use nearby, and then relaying the detected location of the Mac to iCloud so a user can can locate it in the Find My app.

Reminders has been redesigned with an all-new user interface that makes it easier to create, organize and track reminders.
