Apple iPhone Apps Might Recording Users Screen | Without Any Permission

Apple has since put developers on notice that they need to tell users if and when they're recording a user while they're using an app. Further, these screen recordings are sent to app developers to showcase how users have been interacting with apps via their swipe and tap inputs and keyboard types as well. The report specifically mentions that Air Canada's app, as well as other travel apps, record sensitive data, such as passport numbers, credit card information and other personal data.

Air Canada, Expedia, Hotels.com, Singapore Airlines and Abercrombie & Fitch are among the companies mentioned in the probe. This allows developers to record users' screens and play them back to obtain information on how people use the app.

While all of the companies that Techcrunch spoke to said the data they collect is in accordance with their privacy policies, none of the apps explicitly said they collected on-screen activity in this way. The company also added that if the developers fail to do so then they will have to face some hard punishment which also includes the removal of the app from the App Store. In short, companies from now on will either have to explicitly inform users that screen recording will be going on or remove the functionality altogether. This third-party firm embed this technology in the mobile app. In detail, the "session replay" technology allows the companies to play and record the screen. It's no mystery that companies and apps are out to gather data like this, but it becomes worrisome when it's in the hands of a firm or service provider that doesn't have secure measures in place. According to a TechCrunch report, several popular iPhone apps from hotels, travel sites, airlines, carriers, and banks, track everything you do inside the app.

"Glassbox and its customers are not interested in "spying" on consumers", Glassbox told The Verge in a statement.

Privacy is a big deal for many people around the world and numerous devices that we use do a poor jobs of protecting our data.

At the moment, it isn't clear if the apps are in violation of any of Apple's policies but the very fact that they do so secretly is already a red flag.

'Glassbox has a unique capability to reconstruct the mobile application view in a visual format, which is another view of analytics, Glassbox SDK can interact with our customers native app only and technically cannot break the boundary of the app, ' the spokesperson said.

Ambercrombie (sister company of Hollister) confirmed that Glassbox "helps support a seamless shopping experience, enabling us to identify and address any issues customers might encounter in their digital experience". Finally, Glassbox says it provides its customers with "with the ability to mask every piece of data entered by a consumer, restrict access to authorized users, and maintain a full audit log of every user accessing the system".

"The protection of customer data and privacy is of the utmost priority to us".
