AMD gains on new Threadrippers, Athlon

AMD's rival, which continues to hold most of the market share for desktop processors, is making significant price cuts, as much as 50 percent, for the new processors over the previous generation.

The final member of AMD's Ryzen 3000 CPU family, the ultra powerful Ryzen 9 3950X, finally has a release date - as do AMD's freshly-announced 3rd Gen Threadrippers. Both chips will run using AMD's all-new TRX40 chipset with 72 available PCIe 4.0 lanes and 12 USB-C 3.1 gen2 10Gbps SuperSpeed ports.

AMD has today unveiled its Threadripper workstation CPUs, the TR 3960X and the TR3970X.

Next, AMD pulled the sheet off its latest HEDT (high-end desktop) Threadripper processors, the 24-core, 48-thread 3.8GHz base/4.5GHz boost clock Threadripper 3960X and 32-core, 64-thread 3.7GHz base/4.5GHz boost clock Threadripper 3970X. This processor will have a large 32 cores and 64 threads, as well as a base and boost clock speed of 3.7GHz and 4.5GHz. The 3950X, set for a November 25 launch, has a 4.7GHz boost frequency, 3.5GHz base frequency and 72 MB L2 and L3 Cache with a 105-watt thermal design power.

Featuring 8 more cores and 4MB cache - you will have to pay a grand total of $600 more for this version. 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen chipsets will go on sale from November 25. Scientifically speaking, 16 Core Ryzen 9 flaship is actually able to beat 18 Core Intel Skylake refresh CPU due to AMD's Zen 2 microarchitecture 7nm transistor shrink that allows electrons to travel faster than 14nm technology found in Intel. We've got all the core (sorry not sorry) information right here. Indeed, AMD reckon the 3950X will offer up to 79% better multi-core performance in the Cinebench R20 benchmark compared with the i9-9900K, and up to 42% more performance in Adobe Premiere. However, Intel's forthcoming Core i9-10980XE comes with the same amount of cores and a higher boost frequency than the Threadripper 3970X, at 4.8GHz, for $979, half the price of AMD's 3970X and Intel's current-generation 9980XE.

When it comes to power efficiency, the AMD's offering (3950X) offers up to 2.34x more performance per watt compared to the Intel Core i9-9920X.

We'll start off with the new Ryzen 9 3950X, which AMD is pitching as a competitor to the Intel Core i9-9920X.
