Amazon launches Prime membership for S'pore

Amazon have launched Prime in Singapore offering free delivery on millions of products along with streaming media benefits.

Singapore will be the first country in Southeast Asia, and 16th globally, to launch Amazon Prime.

The United States of America, based firm arrived in Singapore, its initially showcase in Southeast Asia, in the month of July at first offering Prime Now, its web-based business benefit with an electric two-hour conveyance window.

These services would be sought now that the American retailer has ended its Free AmazonGlobal Saver Shipping service to Singapore.

However, this does mean the previously free Prime Now service is gone, and users will have to subscribe to Prime if they even want to make a purchase locally, unlike local rivals Redmart and Honestbee, which do not require a subscription to order products such as diapers or groceries.

These are all now available on the Amazon Prime Now app.

Therefore, currently, only Prime members will be eligible for free worldwide shipping on orders above $60 to more than five million products listed on Amazon's site in the United States, which will be made available on the Prime Now mobile app.

The free two-hour delivery on orders over SGD40, between 10am and 10pm daily via the Prime Now app, will also apply to Prime members.

Amazon on Tuesday stopped free shipping options to Singapore for qualifying items over S$168 were reported to be no longer applicable, media reported.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Amazon Prime International's vice president Jamil Ghani noted that the Prime membership is country-specific and not transferable at all - those who already have US Prime memberships can not convert them to local ones, and vice versa. Amazon Prime is also available in India and Japan, so its Asian penetration is growing quickly to encompass a large portion of the fast-growing region. While Amazon Handmade on Prime Now is just a short-term experiment, the trial shows that Amazon is willing to expand its local selection and appeal to an audience that prefers to shop small.
